Abstract
This afterword explores trust as a troubled and turbulent social relation that takes exuberant social forms and often operates as a contested ideology. It highlights how trust-seeking technologies yield unexpected effects, such as forms of sociality without social life, hyper-awareness of geographic context as a means for effective surveillance, a displacement of intimate arts of diplomacy in favour of resilience and distance, uncomfortable relations between captivity and trust, and a renewed awareness of how mistrust shapes expectations when promises are evanescent and interests difficult to discern.

This article explores how a specific pattern of relational ethics
– referred to as 'never . . . too much' – figures as a way of coping
with intimate uncertainties in close relationships. The concept of
relational ethics refers to the historically embedded ways in which
people live and cultivate ethical values through relations and, as
such, also represents an ethnographically grounded conceptual contribution
to ongoing anthropological debates on moral economy. My
research unfolds ethnographic insights into three variations of the
relational ethics of 'never . . . too much', three respective sets of social
actors and relational scales: 'never feel too much'/local women and
their relationship to their marital partner; 'never own too much'/local
men and their relationship to property; 'never settle too much'/female
migrants from Russia and their relationship to the place of settlement.

a particular spatial and temporal location – a border minority town
with a history of (forced) migration, and is a contemporary focal
point of migration, marginalisation by the state and patriarchy.

Like many others, my response to reports of hundreds of thousands of mostly black people stranded in a flood was shock and outrage. My anger grew as I learned of the horrific conditions many of these people endured for days in the New Orleans Superdome and Convention Center—conditions that Jesse Jackson likened to the "hull of a slave ship." Anger is not an inchoate emotion, but rather directed. Being angry means being angry at. Justified anger usually seeks culprits—the individuals and organizations who should be blamed for the wrongs people suffer. In the aftermath of Katrina, much public discussion focused on whether anyone was to blame for the suffering, and if so, who. Some suggested that "the blame game" is unproductive, and that we should accept that when disaster hits, no humans are to blame for the hurt that follows. A few, such as a senator from my state, Barack Obama, argued that blame is indeed unproductive, but that all of us should think about the responsibilities our government and citizens have to people vulnerable in the face of natural disaster.

This article examines political responses to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina to the city of New Orleans in 2005, & the human suffering that resulted. Chicago senator Barack Obama argued that public discussion of blame is unproductive. Instead, people should consider the responsibilities both the government & individual citizens have to people vulnerable in the face of a natural disaster. This article suggests four ways in which blame is unproductive: focusing upon individual agents deflects attention away from structural problems; institutional racism cannot be reduced to individual acts of hate or discrimination; when public discussion is focused upon who to blame, the resulting cynicism & distrust is counterproductive to cooperation; lastly, focusing blame on a recent event deflects attention away from the longer, defective structural processes. As a conclusion, it is noted that the left-wing in America arguing for fairer & higher taxation in order to eliminate poverty need also to address issues of poverty around the world, not just in America. "The scholarly literature on executive compensation is vast. As such, this literature provides an unparalleled resource for studying the interaction between the setting of incentives (or the attempted setting of incentives) and the behavior that is actually adduced. From this literature, there are several reasons for believing that one can set incentives in executive compensation with a high rate of success in guiding CEO behavior, and one might expect CEO compensation to be a textbook example of the successful use of incentives. Also, as executive compensation has been studied intensively in the academic literature, we might also expect the success of incentive compensation to be well-documented. Historically, however, this has been very far from the case. In Too Much Is Not Enough, Robert W. Kolb studies the performance of incentives in executive compensation across many dimensions of CEO performance. The book begins with an overview of incentives and unintended consequences. Then it focuses on the theory of incentives as applied to compensation generally, and as applied to executive compensation particularly. Subsequent chapters explore different facets of executive compensation and assess the evidence on how well incentive compensation performs in each arena. The book concludes with a final chapter that provides an overall assessment of the value of incentives in guiding executive behavior. In it, Kolb argues that incentive compensation for executives is so problematic and so prone to error that the social value of giving huge incentive compensation packages is likely to be negative on balance.
